I make these pinfish traps myself and use them
every day as a light tackle fishing guide down here in Key West,
Florida. My charter business depends on these pinfish traps and the
pinfish and bait they trap. So, I built and tested this pinfish trap design repeatedly
for years. It catches a lot of pinfish and other bait fish. It has
trapped close to 200 pinfish in 24 hrs many
times. On a normal day it will catch around 100 pinfish. Water temperature
has a whole lot to do with the amount of pinfish you trap. When the water gets hot they tend
to move to deeper water. On a bad day when the it seems to catch at least a few dozen here in
Key West. If you live in an area where pinfish are around, I am
sure this pinfish trap will work for you.
I just drop the trap in areas that I know hold pinfish,
areas that I normally catch pinfish on hook and line while chumming. By placing a
frozen block of chum or any other discarded fish parts in the large bait container of the trap, in
24 hrs it is not uncommon for my trap to catch over 100 pinfish. I
tend to catch a few squirrelfish each drop as well. ( If you catch any
regulated species of fish, be sure to release them as quickly as
possible, they are illegal to keep). The trick is to pull the trap as soon as the chum is
gone. They attempt to escape when the food is gone. If
you have food for them they will continue to enter your trap.
This trap design has proved itself time and time
again. It is a truly superior bait fish/pinfish
trap. Try it yourself and spend more time fishing and less
time bait fishing.
